Imagined Flower Challenge: My Approach
On 19th May this year, I jumped into The Imagined Flower Challenge, hosted by @estee.zales.
Seven days of mixing flowers with all sorts of unexpected prompts (some that I didn’t think I was capable of illustrating at first, but I was open to the challenge). It was actually my first time joining an Instagram art challenge, and I thought it would be a fun way to shake things up and also feed into the mentorship programme I’m currently doing with Picture Hooks.
Lately, I’ve been carving out more space for writing and figuring out how my words and pictures can work together. So instead of just combining “flower + prompt,” I decided to push it a bit further. Each day, I turned the prompt into a tiny children’s book moment, complete with named characters, little worlds, and bite-sized narratives that I’d post alongside the illustration that evening.
Working at that pace meant I didn’t have time to overthink. Weirdly, the pressure made the writing lighter and funnier, and I found myself enjoying coming up with snappy, slightly comical dialogue for the characters. It was a playful way to practice, and I ended up with a handful of story seeds I’m really excited about.
I thought I would share my outcomes here as a little memory of my first Instagram challenge ❀
❀ My Challenge outcomes
✿ Day 1: Flower + Vampire
Viv and Vinnie made a friendship chain, so long that there were no daisies left in the garden.
✿ Day 2: Flower + Cheese
“Look, Ziggy! That cloud looks like a bunch of flowers!”
Said Max, smiling up at the sky.
“Hmmm…I just see a cheese platter. See? Cheddar on the right and Brie straight ahead!”
✿ Day 3: Flower + Robot
Today, Nia wanted to show Fib the sunflowers at the bottom of the garden.
She reached up and pulled one down for him to touch, and for the first time, he felt warm inside.
✿ Day 4: Flower + Pencil
Charlie was feeling nervous.
What if no one at her new school liked the same things she did?
✿ Day 5: Flower + Shoe
Betty didn’t believe in “saving things for best.”
She wore her best shoes every day.
✿ Day 6: Flower + Bird
The bouquet toss caused chaos! Not because they wanted to get married, but because there were pink wild peonies and everyone knew those were in this season.
✿ Day 7: Flower + Letter
Poppy always takes the longest route to the post box, so that she can whizz through the wonderful wild flowers.
❀ Challenge highlights
I was super excited to have my pieces featured in Estee’s challenge highlights and on her Substack Journal Rash (which you can subscribe to here).
Estee also took a unique approach with her Imagined Flower Encyclopedia - worth checking out if you haven’t seen it yet!
Definitely inspired to try some more challenges and see where this approach may take me!
All the best, from me & my sketchbook ❀
